What does Smallholding Insurance cover?

Comprehensive protection for your smallholding or small  farm

We currently place Smallholding Insurance via a panel of trusted providers specifically designed to cover small farms or areas of land used for agricultural, horticultural or grazing purposes.

This policy is split across three main sections of cover, i.e. Property Damage, Livestock, and Liabilities (Public & Product, Employers’ and Environmental Liability), with the option to add Legal Expenses and Home Buildings and Contents insurance.

Standard policy benefits include sale of own produce from home/farm gate, attendance at farmers’ markets, exhibiting of own livestock at shows, DIY livery for up to 3 horses, and caravan or tenting accommodation for up to 6 pitches. Where insurance for Home Buildings and Contents is added, cover for up to 6 paying guests (bed & breakfast) is also included.

Cover can be tailored to suit your individual circumstances, with the flexibility to extend certain standard policy limits – e.g. acreage, livery, pitches, Public & Product Liability – where required.

Frequently asked questions

What is a smallholding?

A smallholding is typically a property that has more land than a regular garden but isn’t as vast as a traditional farm. It’s a space where you might cultivate crops, raise livestock, or both. While there’s no strict acreage defining a smallholding, it’s commonly accepted to be any piece of land under 50 acres. This can vary from tiny plots resembling allotments to nearly-small farms. You can learn more about Smallholder Insurance and who needs it by visiting our blog.

What is the difference between Smallholders Insurance and Farm Insurance?

Smallholders Insurance is for hobby farmers and small-scale producers, covering property, limited livestock, public liability, and small business activities. It’s ideal for those managing land as a lifestyle choice rather than a business.

Farm Insurance is for commercial farms, covering buildings, livestock, machinery, business interruption, and liability risks. It suits larger farms that employ staff and generate primary income.

Which one do you need?
If your farm is your main income source, Farm Insurance is best. If it’s a hobby or side venture, Smallholders Insurance is more suitable.

Can I add home buildings to my Smallholding Insurance policy?

Absolutely! Greenlands allows you to optionally include both your home buildings and their contents in your Smallholding Insurance. However, it’s essential to understand the nuances. If your home and contents are already under a specialist Smallholding or Small Farm Insurance policy, you’re likely set. But, if they’re under a standalone household policy, there might be coverage gaps during claims. It’s always best to double-check. Unsure? Our expert advisers are here to guide you. What is the maximum acreage this Smallholders Insurance policy will cover?

Greenlands’ Smallholders Insurance is designed to cover properties from 0 to 250 acres. If your smallholding exceeds 250 acres, it would be best suited on Farm Insurance policy. We’re here to ensure every piece of land, big or small, gets the right coverage.

Should I have Employer's Liability cover for my smallholding?

Employer’s Liability (EL) cover is a shield against claims from employees injured at work or affected by work-related illnesses. Even if most smallholders don’t formally employ people, there are often friends or relatives lending a hand. Whether they’re paid or just volunteering, having EL cover is a wise precaution. Recognising its importance, Greenlands includes EL cover as a standard in all Smallholding Insurance policies, safeguarding you up to a £10 million limit. It’s our way of ensuring peace of mind for every smallholder. For guidance on how to accurately assess your smallholding insurance needs, view our blog here

Testimonials

“We’ve had insurance cover with Greenlands since 2009 for our dairy farm and growing holiday lets. With many changes to our businesses over the years, their experienced staff have been excellent – keeping us informed and smoothly updating our insurance policies. Greenlands have always been very competitive, which is hugely important to us, and we find it reassuring to know whenever we need to contact them that there’s always someone at the end of a phone”

Teifi and Rhys Evans

We’d like to thank Greenlands for the exceptional service we’ve received for 20+ years. They’ve insured our vehicles, farm property, stock and tourism business efficiently and with one-to-one contact when needed.

We’ve had to make a substantial claim in the last year, with the house being affected by a burst in the attic that caused much damage. This was very upsetting, but the help that we received was very much appreciated; we were appointed professional assessors who dealt with us promptly and efficiently.

Thank you for your continued service.

Arwel and Neris Davies

“I just wanted to express my thanks to you and your colleagues for your speed, efficiency, attention to details and customer focus in dealing with my application over the last few days. I particularly appreciated the personal touch of you calling me to follow up both the initial enquiry and me coming on board.

I can now understand why Greenlands is so widely recommended – and I will be doing the same”
