In the event of a Policyholder being in the unfortunate position of suffering a large loss such as a fire, the Insurer will retain the services of a Loss Adjuster to manage the claim on their behalf. In recent months and as a consequence of COVID-19, there has been a shift towards Loss Adjusters undertaking “virtual” visits, using video technology to avoid unnecessary contact during this testing time, but as we move towards returning to some degree of normality and particularly in the event of a complicated large loss or where the policyholder would be deemed to be a vulnerable customer, a site visit will be undertaken as a matter of course.
The role of the Loss Adjuster by Charter is to act impartially in the assessment of the claim, essentially interpreting policy cover independently and providing advice and guidance to the Policyholder in terms of what they may seek recover under the terms of their insurance contract. We will establish if the loss has resulted from an insured event (such as a storm), how adequate insurance cover is for the loss and how much is payable under the terms of insurance cover.
In the majority of situations, the Loss Adjuster is there to help and following a major incident, they will assist with advice on a business recovery strategy, arrange interim payments and the general coordination of what may be a complex, harrowing and hopefully, once in a lifetime experience for the claimant. At Sedgwick, we have a dedicated team of loss adjusters, specialising in agricultural and rural insurance claims, with the experience and empathy to manage a wide range of insured events that may be experienced by the farmer.
